There is no question that a diet of well-chosen foods which are properly prepared and highly nutrient rich allows the body to fare quite well as data from primitive societies has shown. Although excellent food choices and preparation methods are made the chances these foods are highly nutrient dense is minimal. So what can be done? The answer is PROPER SUPPLEMENTATION.

Supplementation is not the answer for poor eating habits and smoking. Proper supplementation is to augment a VERY HEALTHY DIET! But, supplementing a few individual vitamins and minerals is not very effective and sometimes harmful. The WOES of SOY!

soy-beansToday, many books and diet plans promote eating foods based on SOY for health and weight loss.  But, when solid research facts are HONESTLY  evaluated soy is shown to have several natural TOXINS and high temperature chemical processing adds many more.  As early as 1972, a soy textbook (Soy Beans: Chemistry and Technology) listed a number of well-documented toxic effects of soybeans.

A serious problem when eating soy is that it is a GOITROGEN, that is, it depresses thyroid function.  The hypothyroid lowers metabolism rate causing weight gain even when calories are reduced.

Researchers at the National Center for Toxicological Research found the anti-thyroid component of soy to be phytoestrogens (isoflavones) which INHIBIT the synthesis of thyroid hormone.  ALL SOY FOODS, including tofu, soymilk, protein bars, and meal replacements, contain these thyroid inhibiting isoflavones.  In 1999, these government researchers wrote a letter URGING the FDA to put a health warning on all soy foods, rather than the health claim the FDA eventually approved.

The effects of soy foods can be DECEPTIVE.  Dieters, relying heavily on soy, often have initial weight loss and energy increase, since at first the thyroid gland works harder to counteract the effects of the soy isoflavones. But after time, the thyroid gives out, with hypothyroidism the result.  The dieter rapidly regains the lost weight, and then adds more weight while often feeling lethargic, cold, unfocused, and sometimes depressed.

Soy contains other ANTI-NUTRANTS: phytic acid which blocks mineral absorption and enzyme inhibitors that block the exaymes needed for protein digestion.  Animal studies in 1974 indicate that soy protein isolate, the major ingredient in modern soy foods, creates increased requirements for vitamins D, E, K, and B-12 and deficiencies in many important minerals.  Long term consumption of high levels of soy foods can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies.  Yet, the U.S. government allows a health claim for foods containing soy protein, and many government agencies, health organizations, and diet plans encourage consumption of large amounts of soy foods.

Promoters of soy for health and weight loss point to the Asian diet, which they claim contains lots of soy.  In fact, soy consumption is relatively low in Asia, ranging from an average of two tablespoons per day in Japan to two teaspoons per day in China.  Eve so, thyroid problems are widespread in Asia.  How much better to follow the practices of typical people, who consume large amounts of thyroid-supporting coconut.  If this isn’t bad enough, soy seed is GMO modified and controlled by the Monsanto Corporation.  See the documentary film, Food Inc.,  and you’ll begin to see how money and power are controlling our food industry.  The HEALTH of our nation and world is of LITTLE concern to the bureaucrats,  CEO’s, and media.  What drives their dictates is MONEY.

The Scandalous Vilifying of Cholesterol

The big drug companies, FDA, AMA and other reputed health agencies have done an effective job of vilifying cholesterol (also saturated fat) as the major cause of atherosclerosis and heart disease.  Let’s examine what is generally kept quiet.

Cholesterol is NOT the cause of heart disease but rather a potent antioxidant against damaging free radicals in the blood, and a repair substance that helps heal arterial damage.  Note: arterial plaques contain very little cholesterol.

Like fats, cholesterol may be damaged by exposure to heat and oxygen.  This damaged or oxidized cholesterol seems to promote both injury to the arterial cells as well as buildup of plaque in the arteries.  Such damaged cholesterol is found in powdered eggs and powdered milk (added to reduced-fat milks to give them body) and in meats and fats that have been heated to high temperatures in frying and other high temperature processes.

High serum cholesterol levels indicate that the body needs cholesterol to protect itself from excessive free radicals and oxidation causing damaging inflammation which is driven primarily by poor food choices, excessive insulin production and all forms of stress.

Low thyroid function often results in high cholesterol levels.  When thyroid function is poor-usually due to a diet high in sugar, low in usable iodine, fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients, the body floods the blood with cholesterol.  This is an adaptive and protective mechanism, providing a super abundance of materials needed to heal tissues and produce protective steriods.  Hypothyroid individuals are particularly susceptible to infections, heart disease and cancer.

Taking a statin drug, which inhibits the liver’s enzyme for making cholesterol, lowers one of the body’s main defenses AGAINST this damaging inflammation and hypothyroidism.  Why not simply adjust the diet to reduce inflammation and improve thyroid function rather than prescribe a statin drug?  Such an approach could essentially eliminate the 60 billion dollar a year statin drug market.  Do you think this may be a reason the simple diet solution is not heavily promoted?

One of the most respected research studies, refuting the CONVENTIONAL lipid hypothesis of heart disease, is the Framingham Heart Study.  This study followed the dietary habits of 15,000 participants (residents of Framingham, Mass.) over three generations.  It is considered the longest and most comprehensive study of health and illness in medical history; it lead to the publication of more than 1200 research articles in leading journals.  Among the study’s highlights are these:

  • THERE IS NO CORRELATION between dietary cholesterol intake and blood cholesterol levels.
  • FRAMINGHAM RESIDENTS WHO ATE THE MOST cholesterol, saturated fat, and total calories actually weighed the least and were the most physically active.

Ironically, recent research indicates that oxidation and inflammation might be made worse by consuming (cholesterol-free) polyunsaturated fats in vegetable and grain oils that the medical profession and media lead us to believe are healthier than animal fats.  The millions who use statin drugs (having serious side effects) show little or no reduction in heart disease-just a reduction in the all important cholesterol.

Much of what we are told about nutrition is dictated by BIG MONEY.  But, it is possible to sieve through these untruths by considering the diets around 1900.  They ate lots of raw milk products, meat and eggs from healthy free range animals and fresh organic fruits and vegetables.  They were essentially devoid of degenerative diseases. Health Conspiracy – Choosing Profit Over Health!

moneyThe real health conspiracy that exists is a pill that’s hard to swallow. Can profit really come before health? Absolutely! Here’s an example…

In the 1960′s, the Japanese discovered a substance that inhibits cholesterol production.  However, animal studies revealed that the compound was highly toxic so the Japanese wisely concluded it had NO MEDICAL USE.  They sold their discovery to Merck, the American drug company, who rapidly received FDA approval for the substance as a cholesterol lowering drug.

The Merck drug is now known as Mevacor and similar products are sold by other companies as Lovastatin, Pravastatin, Fluvastatin and Simvastatin.  Side effects include liver damage, cancer, stroke, intestinal diseases, depression, antisocial behavior and suicide.  These drugs also block the body’s production of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) which is CRITICAL for a healthy heart.

How sad people are taking such toxic substances to lower cholesterol, when the high cholesterol is NOT the real issue.  The problem is the high level of inflammation that is signaling the liver to increase the production of cholesterol (an antioxidant) to help reduce the inflammation.  Artifically lowering cholesterol only exacerbates the inflammation.

So pervasive is the anti-cholesterol propaganda that Americans are willing to pay 60 billion dollars a year for these toxins, while their health continues to decline.  Yet, it is known that the inflammation, causing the increased cholesterol production, is readily controlled by diet.  But, should this simple solution be widely promoted the media and drug companies would lose billions of dollars.  therefore, the drug propaganda continues while this simple solution to health is buried.

Margarine – A Conglomeration of Chemicals

margarineDo you REALLY know what makes Margarine?! You’re not going to believe what you’re eating!

Hydrogenating polyunsaturated oils converts them into margarine and shortening.  The manufacturers use the cheapest oils, which are canola, corn, cottonseed, and soy, that have been partially oxidized to toxic oils from the high temperature extraction process.

Soap-like emulsifiers and starch are added to the hydrogenated oil to give it better consistency.  Then the products UNPLEASANT ODOR is removed with steam at high temperatures.  The margarine is then BLEACHED to remove its unappetizing gray color.  Finally dyes and ARTIFICIAL flavorings are added to make it resemble butter.  This concoction is packaged in blocks or tubs and sold as a healthy food by the marketing genius of the food processing industries.

Let’s stop and think for just a moment: a polyunsaturated vegetable oil, already made partially toxic from high temperature extraction, is mixed with very fine metal particles and hydrogenated with hydrogen gas at high temperature and pressure.  The resulting solid mass (including some metal particles) is infused with emulsifiers and starch, followed with steam cleaning and bleaching.  To make this mass palatable, dyes and strong flavors are added.  Then wa-la!  We have margarine!

Meanwhile, the brainwashed public tends to ignore the shelf with HEALTHY natural wholesome butter and reaches for this UNHEALTHY synthetic conglomeration of chemicals as their preferred spread.

Don’t Villainize Saturated Fats!

steakMy frustration keeps mounting!! When will the promoters of healthy nutrition stop the insanity of promoting low fat and, WORST OF ALL, low saturated fat. Often, even “health food” restaurants promote having lean meats and low saturated fats in their meals.

In the early 1900′s, most fats in the diet were saturated and mono-unsaturated; mostly from butter, coconut oil and olive oil. Today, most fats in the diet are poly-unsaturated vegetable oils from canola, corn, safflower and soy. Cancer and heart disease are at epidemic levels today while in the early 1900′s they were a rarity.

The promotion of lean (low fat) meals with very low saturated fat is not healthy. This makes no more sense than a modern chemist promoting earth, air, fire and water as the four existing elements rather than the periodic table of elements.

Let me explain…

NATURAL SATURATED FAT is essential for the proper absorption of many minerals and vitamins. Healthy cells require saturated fat. The heart uses saturated fat as its source of energy. Very little saturated fat is found in arterial blockages – the bulk of blockage is oxidized polyunsaturated fats.

The dietary gurus say that polyunsaturated oils are healthy while the saturated fats cause cancer and heart disease. This simply is NOT TRUE!

Actually, I was one who believed saturated fats were unhealthy. But, with more investigation, the errors of this thinking became obvious. I’ll cover this in a second note – Why Saturated Fats ARE Essential.

What’s interesting is that there’s not much profit in butter and extra virgin olive oil, but there are huge profits in hydrogenated oils and vegetable oils that have been extracted at the low-cost high-temperature method. FYI, this process renders these oils toxic through oxidation and structure changes to “trans-fats.”
